What injustice does Foolish Foods recognize?

The injustice that my work is based on fighting is environmental racism in communities. With food wastage, communities and areas that are less financially stable become more polluted and less habitable. The majority of the people living in these types of communities are people of color and minorities. Multiple factors feed into this issue, such as the growth of marginalized communities, land-use policies, and economic consequences. Marginalized communities are often low-income and consist of people of color. These communities are also commonly established near landfills and industrial facilities. Due to this, the access of healthy food and adequate health is restricted, and the issue of food wastage adds on more conflicts. The health risks associated with food waste, such as increased levels of air pollution and exposure to harmful chemical, are all targeted towards minority communities. Land-use policies additionally feed into environmental racism. Local governments often allow management facilities, like the ones that deal with food waste, to be placed in lower-income communities rather than wealthier ones. This results in higher levels of food waste in marginalized communities and exacerbates the negative health impacts. The issue of food waste also causes great financial loss on communities. This loss can be particularly damaging for small-scale and low-income farmers, who may not have the resources to absorb the costs of wasted food. At the same time, low-income communities may also be forced to bear the economic burden of food waste through higher food prices and decreased access to healthy food options.
