WHO WE ARE

Hello! My name is Shiza Hussain, and I am the creator and founder of Foolish Foods! Throughout my life, I have always had involvement with the environment, leading to the creation of Foolish Food. Foolish Foods aims at raising awareness and change against the environmentally racist issue of food wastage. We acknowledge the detestable effects food wastage on our environment, but also acknowledge how it feeds into racism and a lack of moral rights. Our articles and artistic literature (on this website, our Instagram, and our Twitter) broadcast our work throughout a vast multitude of communities. Our literature and articles provide awareness and consciousness about food wastage and how it targets minority communities, which is often ignored. Foolish Food aims to shed light on the intersection between environmental racism and its impact on communities, particularly regarding food systems and the oceans. By conducting research, organizing events, and creating educational resources, we constantly seek to inform others about the disproportionate environmental burdens and injustices faced by marginalized communities.  Foolish Foods has organized beach cleanups near our town, engaged and led in advocacy campaigns, and collaborated with local organizations to address issues related to environmental racism and ocean conservation.

MY STORY

After a week-long trip to Washington D.C with the organization APAICS (Asian Pacific American Islanders for Congressional Studies), I realized the importance of taking intiative in my community about issues that face injustices. This program heavily relied on using Asian American representation to sustain change, as this community is often overlooked and ignored in legislative situations.

Throughout the week, I bettered my enforcement, leadership, and negotiation skills. I then observed the marginalization and works of environmental racism in my town and the greater community. I decided to start Foolish Food, and through the organization, I have been able to reach hundreds of students across the country and help them understand how to combat food waste in their communities. I was also able to help pass a bill in my home state of Massachusetts that gave a tax incentive to food providers like restaurants and grocery stores who donated their uneaten food to food receivers like food banks and panties.

OUR GOAL

Our goal is to continue to inspire others to take action, promote social and environmental justice, and contribute to building a more sustainable and equitable future. This is done with engagement from different communities, awareness through social media and literature, and leading other passionate youth members. Join our mission by reading our articles and sharing your story with us!
